An ultrasound is a medical tests that uses high frequency sound waves to create images of internal organs and structures. Pregnant women often receive several ultrasounds throughout their pregnancy. Doctors look at ultrasound images to see that the baby is growing normally and is healthy. Sometimes, ultrasounds can even reveal (after about 20 weeks) if the baby is a boy or a girl! You can also hear the baby's heartbeat by ultrasound providing a wonderful connection for mother and child.
